The One with the Secret Closet

My brother has told me a few times that I remind him of Monica on Friends. At first I took as a compliment because she's so clean and tidy, but the fact that he's said it at times where I'm being very particular about something makes me think that maybe her more annoyingly particular traits remind him of me... Anyway, if you've seen the Friends episode where Chandler is trying to figure out what's in Monica's secret locked closet, you know that behind that door was a huge mess that she was hiding to give the appearance that everything in her home was clean.

I really like a clean, organized house, but I'm known to stuff things in a closet so that the mess is out of sight. Our computer armoire recently had gotten out of control. When my sister wanted to check email at our house a couple months ago, I realized what an embarrassment it is when the armoire doors are actually open. I needed to clean out files so I could file more recent papers, but that takes FOREVER, and what mom has time for that? Well, I've been working on it little by little, and finally got it looking more respectable. This is kind of hard for me to post since I like being thought of as a tidy person, but I rarely accomplish something like this, so it seems fitting to post it on the blog. :)
The armoire with the doors closed. See, there's no mess here!

Oh, the horrors. Look at the piles of paper on the top. Please don't judge me...
The almost finished product. I'm still on the lookout for really cute organizational products that don't cost an arm and a leg, yet are the perfect combination of colors. For now, the white plastic whiffle-ball buckets will have to do.
The bottom cupboard--just so you don't think I stuffed everything down there.

My helpers who woke up from their naps as I was finishing up.

Now, if you have a great system for organizing special cards received from loved ones, I'd greatly hearing about it!

Kim I love this post! Your wit and personality come shining through (: I have been looking for just such a cupboard so that I can do exactly what you're trying to remedy here--put the mess behind closed doors! Mainly a place for Ada's toys and art supplies. Let me know if you find any great ways to store letters. Right now i have them scattered between an accordion file and various boxes. I do like modge podge for transforming cardboard boxes into pretty storage containers--just cover them with pretty magazine or calendar pictures and paste over the top.
Good work with the organizing, and good work napping to the little ones!

Oh, Kim...I think this might be one of my favorite posts of yours EVER. We, too, are in the process of trying to figure out a "system" to organize our home office area and all those dreadful piles of paperwork that seem to follow me everywhere. :) You did amazing work, and you are an inspiration...and, for the record...there is no Friends character I don't like, so I think i would take Bryan's teasing as a compliment. :) :) :)

You're an inspiration, Kim! I am a lot like you. Messes and clutter drive me insane, so I end up with major pile-up zones, usually in our bedroom or other hidden spots ;). I've been in quite the purge mode for the last few weeks too. There is nothing better than organizing and throwing things away/taking a load to goodwill ;). Nice work!

so cute Kim! We can go to Michaels this weekend and look for cute baskets, they always have sales. Also for special cards and are you looking for somewhere to display them or store them later? I like to hang a string on the wall and put them up with cute paper clips or those wood laundry hangers...can't remember what those are called. as for storing them, I'm still trying to figure that our myself...we can brainstorm this weekend.
